Multi-awarded actor endorses clean-up of Manila Bay

Versatile and multi-awarded actor, Raymond Bagatsing, stars in a series of public service announcements (PSAs) for the upcoming International Coastal Clean-up Day (ICCD). The PSAs were launched in the social media aiming to inspire people to protect Manila Bay and our marine resources against trash and impending reclamation projects

The videos were produced by Earth Island Institute Philippines (EII-Phils) with the help of indie film-maker, Karl Ramirez; volunteer artists, environmentalists, birders and fisherfolks. In spite of the onslaught of the Typhoon Maring, the actors and the production team found ways to shoot four different stories depicting lovers, tourists, wild bird enthusiasts and fisherfolks affected by the worsening trash problem.

The group said that coastal clean-ups are not only campaigns to inspire people to love the environment. The campaign sounds the alarm over environmental depletion due to apathy as well as the government’s lack of political will to rehabilitate the environment. The groups note that public funds that should have been allotted for the environment and for other social services are being used by politicians for their private interests. The group is optimistic that the ICCD would serve as a call to all citizens, as well as to the government, to act upon the garbage problem and to rechannel funds for the environment and other social services.

The ICCD, which is globally celebrated every 3rd week of September, will be held at Freedom Island and Long Island (the islands comprising the Las Pinas-Paranaque Critical Habitat and Eco-tourism Area) on September 21 at 7:00 a.m. Said area is a bird sanctuary and the last remaining mangrove frontier in Metro Manila which was recently included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. It is also a subject of the controversial P14 Billion reclamation project.

The Earth Island Outdoor Environmental Club will also spearhead a clean-up drive in General Santos City on the 21st that would be participated by various student groups and organizations. A lecture about marine pollution shall also be given in the Barangay Bula gym by marine biologist, Alfonso Pading.
